The ELTForum.sk (English Language Teaching Forum) conference is an annual two-day professional development event in Slovakia specifically designed for teachers of English in order to improve their pedagogical skills as well as facilitate networking in the ELT (English language teaching) community in central Europe. Attended by over 500 ELT professionals from both Slovakia and abroad, the conference provides a rich programme of plenary sessions, workshops, and talks, as well as a vibrant social and cultural programme. ELTForum serves as a unique opportunity for Slovak teachers of English to meet leading experts and professionals from the ELT world and exchange ideas in numerous discussions and settings. Book stalls and resource exhibitions presented by various ELT publishing houses and institutions are also a popular part of the conference. ELTForum is currently the largest international event on the English Language Teaching calendar in Slovakia.
In early 2011, several ELT organisations in Slovakia recognised the need for an ELT teacher development conference and came together to organise and hold one in Slovakia’s capital city, Bratislava. The original members of the organising committee were the British Council, OUP Slovakia, Cambridge University Press, Macmillan SR, Express Publishing (Infoa), the Association of Language Schools SR and with the cooperation of the Slovak Association of Teachers of English. The first ELTForum Conference Slovakia was held June 10-11, 2011, at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport (Fakulta telesnej výchovy a športu), Comenius University, in Bratislava. The conference was opened by the Slovak Minister of Education, Eugen Jurzyca, and the British Ambassador to Slovakia, … . Michael Swan was the keynote speaker. Roughly 200 teachers attended.
The same organising committee, with the exception of the British Council and with the addition of a representative for Slovak teacher training universities, organised and hosted two more ELTForum.sk conferences in Bratislava, in 2012 and 2013. The Association of Language Schools became the primary organiser in 2012 and the Slovak Chamber of English Teachers joined the organising committee in 2013. The 2012 conference was attended by over 250 teachers. The 2013 conference grew to over 350 participants (not including speakers, exhibitors and volunteers) from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary and over 50 presenters from Vienna, Moscow, Lyon, Malta, London, Brno, Usti nad Labem (CZ), Tuzla (BiH), Sremski Karlovci (Serbia), Ulm (DE) as well as from all over Slovakia. The International Teacher Development Institute played a significant role in promoting and supporting 2013 conference. Both the 2012 and 2013 conferences were held at the University of Economics in Bratislava.
